"Dawn" Look-Alike Contest
DragonCon
Altanta 2005
There is a lot of buzz and notoriety in the Dawn Look-Alike Contest every year at DragonCon in Atlanta.
Based on the Linsner comic character. We originally heard about the contest through our friends in the band Emerald Rose, and they importuned upon us unceasingly that we should witness the wonder that is DragonCon and enter the Dawn show-down.
We found the whole event to be a swirling maelstrom of fantastical fun and found much to our liking. As for the Dawn contest, of course we sought an approach that melded bodypainting with more traditional costuming elements. We were blessed to have the company of our good friend Craig Tracey and his lovely lady Kayce who had just evacuated their home in New Orleans a few days before because of hurricane Katrina, so it was a crazy time for them. Craig had just returned from Austria, where he had won the first place award at the 2005 World Bodypainting Championship . The two of us together bodypainted Madelyn as "Druid Dawn" taking our cues from a specific Linsner lllustration (see above).
As part of the performance part of the contest Madelyn devised a plan to have Logan and Clyde from Emerald Rose each entice her (with an emerald rose, of course) only to be rebuffed. I then came out, dazzled her and (literally) swept her off her feet. All this allowed her to show a variety of dance moves and the crowd responded very favorably. It was certainly more of a show than any of the other contestants put forward. You can see all of this in the video.
Alas, it was to no avail. And while we didn't walk away with a prize that day we had a great time at the Con, had dinner with another New Orleans evacuee and bodypaint artist, Marrus, and Madelyn had a moment of on-stage fun as a Neanderthal doo-wop girl during Emerald Rose's performance of their new song "We All Come From Monkeys", from their new album (whose cover art is by me).
Pictures of Dawn
At the conclusion of the Dawn contest event, there is the "gauntlet", a place to stroll before a whole squadron of photographers (mostly amateurs) and have your picture taken. Many of these immediately find their way onto innumerable fan websites. Here is a collection of images of Madelyn as Dawn drawn from these sources. I have largely just left the images as they were on the web, and many of them have some kind of identifying mark from the photographer. I am interested in giving proper credit, so if anyone notices that these images are mislabeled, let me know.
