We have spent our lives inside the oldest art form on earth.
What follows is how two people found it, and how it found them.
How it began
It began on a warm summer afternoon at a festival. A friend asked Scott to paint a few decorative touches on her arms, and something opened that has never closed since. He found himself painting on people, and the response was unlike anything he had encountered in any other medium, a shockwave of pure current moving through a crowd. He felt like a conduit for a catalyzing force, turning ordinary people into a riot of living color. A moving Monet. A sunlit garden, covered head to toe in painted flowers.
One of those painted gardens looked up at him with big brown eyes, and he could barely think to breathe, much less paint. She is still beside him. Madelyn came to bodypainting from the other side of the brush, from a long, hard relationship with her own body, and a need to make peace inside her own skin. She saw a woman in full paint at a festival, a piece so exquisite it stopped her breath, and resolved to find the artist and become his canvas. Beneath his brushes she became a garden of flowers, and fell in love twice over, with the art, and with the man making it.
Bodypainting gave each of them something they had not expected. It gave them each other. And it gave them back to themselves.
Married on the main stage of the World Bodypainting Festival, beside an early festival painting.
Who we are now
We are still painting. After the championships and the records and the festivals we founded, the work continues, now broadcast live, made in real time, shared with anyone who wants to watch a living artwork come into being.
The world has changed, and the tools have changed with it. We have always been artists who reinvent: a new category, a new stage, a new way of working. This is simply the newest chapter of that same instinct. The same hands. The same conviction that the human form is whole and beautiful and worth celebrating. A new way of bringing it to the world.
The short bio
Scott Fray and Madelyn Greco of LivingBrush are the only bodypainting artists in history to win all five World Championship titles, across five distinct categories, consecutively, in four years. They have won first-place titles in Asia and the United States and hold a Guinness World Record. They founded Living Art America, the North American Bodypainting Championship and the largest event of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, and the Jan Tana Bodypainting Revolution featured in the Arnold Sports Festivals. They are the only Americans invited to present a TEDx talk on bodypainting, and they judge, teach, and create at events around the world.
